Seed Planting Instructions:

1. Seed Preparation: Wild Senna seeds have a hard coat that requires scarification to promote germination. Lightly rub the seeds with sandpaper or soak them in hot water (approximately 175°F) for 10 minutes, then continue soaking them overnight at room temperatu

2. Cold Stratification: To break seed dormancy, mix the scarified seeds with moist sand and place them in a ziplock bag. Alternate between refrigeration and freezing: one day in the refrigerator, followed by one day in the freezer. Repeat this cycle for a week.

3. Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds just below the soil surface in pots, maintaining consistent moisture.

4. Transplanting: Once seedlings have developed and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing plants 2 to 3 feet apart to accommodate their mature size.

5. Direct Sowing: Alternatively, sow scarified seeds directly outdoors in the fall, planting them just below the soil surface. This allows natural cold stratification over winter, with germination occurring in spring.

Perennial arugula flowers have a wonderful aroma that will permeate your entire garden.  Honeybees love this flower!  The flowers, buds and leaves are edible and make a very special salad by themselves or mixed with other greens.  The flavor is spicier than common arugula- use on pizzas, sandwiches, sauteed, even as a pesto! Leaves will keep 7-10 days in the salad crisper in your refrigerator.

If left alone, the plant can grow to around 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide.  However, keeping the arugula leaves harvested results in more tender new leaves.

Persicaria virginiana ‘Lance Corporal’, commonly known as jumpseed, knotweed or smartweed.

‘Lance Corporal’ is an upright, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial bearing ovate, bright green leaves with a prominent, dark red to black, chevron-shaped mark in the center of each leaf. The leaf looks reminiscent of a prayer plant, with a chartreuse green leaf and a large maroon chevron through the center. Slender, loose racemes of green flowers that turn bright red will bloom in late summer and early autumn.

Upright growing with a clean habit and reaching 36″.  Self-seeds. Blends well with woodland plants. Adds color to the shade garden.

Problems

No serious insect or disease problems. Deer resistant.
