Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Purple’, commonly known as Columbine, Granny’s Bonnet, European Columbine

Biennials, by definition, complete their life cycle over two growing seasons. The first year, they produce only foliage. The second year they bloom, set seed, and then die. But they self-sow their seeds so readily, you will think you have the same showy perennials year after year.

Although columbines grow in sun, they prefer dappled shade and the organically rich, moist soil of their native forest home.

This purple varietal can reach 3 feet tall in a sunny location, with multiple branches of dozens of beautiful flowers.  Self-seeds. Blends well with woodland plants such as ferns, meadowrues (thalictrum), peonies, bleeding hearts and corydalis.  Adds beautiful color and leaf shapes to the shade garden.

Problems

No serious insect or disease problems. Leaf miners can make doodles on leaves, but do not harm the plant. Deer resistant.

Purple flowers are stunning.  Use in beds and borders. Wildflower gardens. Cottage gardens. Herb gardens.
