How to take care of red bamboo plants

Each quantity of our bamboo contains a minimum of 1-2 culms (shoots/stems). Once you have received you clumping bamboo, you should plant it in well-drained soil (bamboo plants do not like wet feet) and in the correct light exposure. The bamboo roots will establish themselves this growing season and will start to produce new culms. Once mature, clumping bamboo plants produce new culms each year that are a few inches from the previous year’s growth. Clumping bamboo plants form a slowly expanding, dense clump. As with all bamboo plants, the older culms die after 4 or 5 years and will look best if removed, but other than that, clumping bamboos are low maintenance.

Why grow bamboo plants in the outdoor garden?

Bamboo plants are wonderful outdoor plants that add unusual, exotic structure to your garden or fence line. Our Red Bamboo, Fargesia nitida, is a cold hardy clumping bamboo varietal perfect for the temperate garden to zone 5.

Which is best…clumping bamboo or running bamboo?

Bamboo plants have a reputation- some species will spread pervasively in the garden and into your neighbor’s garden/lawn, and beyond. Spreading bamboo plants use underground runners or leptomorphs, and create trouble for gardeners trying to coral the spread of bamboo into unwanted areas.

Fortunately, our red bamboo plants are part of a different class of bamboo plants that clump, instead of run, and are well behaved. This clumping bamboo behavior, called “pachymorphs”, have the clumping bamboo plants forming tight, circular clumps of graceful, arching stems. Red clumping bamboo is the only type of bamboo plant we sell.

An ornamental, non-invasive, clumping bamboo with finely textured foliage and striking red canes that turn yellow with time. An excellent, cold hardy specimen or container plant, its upright habit makes it very suitable for hedges or privacy screening. Thrives in cooler summer regions. Evergreen.
